Monday Night Mayhem $10.96 Just as Jon Voight’s on-target portrayal of controversial sportscaster Howard Cosell) in the 2002 biopic Ali was making the theatrical rounds, actor John Turturro offered his own spin on “Humble Howard” in the made-for-cable movie Monday Night Mayhem. Based on the book by Bill Carter and Marc Gunther, the film chronicles the creation of ABC Television’s Monday Night Football telecast in 1970, then continues with the weekly telecast’s rapid ascent to the top of the ratings. Reasoning that such a momentous undertaking needed a spectacular “star” lineup in the announcing booth, ABC’s aggressive sports director Roone Arledge (John Heard) teams the highly opinionated, irritatingly erudite Cosell with not one but two charismatic ex-athletes, “Dandy Don” Meredith (Brad Beyer) and Frank Gifford (Kevin Anderson). The film makes much of Cosell’s open disdain towards his “intellectually inferior” co-anchors and of Meredith and Gifford’s reaction to their booth-mate’s jibes, and also recreates many of Monday Night Football’s highlights, notably Cosell’s announcement in the middle of an important game that John Lennon has just been murdered. Long Day’s Journey Into Night $14.62 Previously filmed by director Sidney Lumet in 1962, Eugene O’Neill’s gloomy Pulitzer Prize-winning play Long Day’s Journey Into Night is given a vibrant videotaped treatment by Jonathan Miller. Set on one hot August day and night in 1912, the story concerns the tragic Tyrone family (based, as any American literature student will tell, on O’Neill’s own star-crossed clan). The four principals include James Tyrone (Jack Lemmon), a once-great actor who compromised his talent by barnstorming all over the country in a tired melodrama and by consuming great quantities of alcohol; James’ wife Mary (Bethel Leslie), a morphine addict who lives in a world of dreams and delusions; oldest son Jamie (Kevin Spacey), a drunken hellraiser; and sensitive,tuberculosis-ridden younger son Edmund (Peter Gallagher), the Eugene O’Neill counterpart. As originally staged, Long Day’s Journey Into Night was a long journey indeed, running close to four hours. Director Miller wisely prunes the text down to the essentials, and with equal wisdom packs plenty of visual dynamics into an otherwise excessively verbose piece. He Walked By Night $5.92 The “He” of the title is Richard Basehart, a clever but psychopathic burglar (based on real-life criminal Erwin Walker) Basehart stays one step ahead of the law by listening in to the police band on his radio. To avoid detection, he changes his M.O. on each crime, making it seem that the string of burglaries is the work of several thieves. But Basehart trips himself up when he kills a cop. His own personal Waterloo occurs in the Los Angeles sewer system–a stylish predecessor to the similar (and more widely praised) climax in Sir Carol Reed’s The Third Man. Though the direction is credited to Hollywood old-timer Alfred Werker, most of He Walked By Night is the handiwork of an uncredited Anthony Mann. Featured in the film’s cast is Jack Webb in the small role of a police lab technician. One Night at McCool’s $10.51 The debut project from co-star Michael Douglas’ production company Further Films, this comic crime caper uses the narrative devices of multiple points of view and flashbacks, a la Rashomon (1951) and that classic film’s many imitators. A late-night slaying at a bar called McCool’s is the point of departure as Detective Dehling (John Goodman), bartender Randy (Matt Dillon), and Randy’s lawyer-cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) project their fantasies onto the sexy Jewel (Liv Tyler), whose boyfriend (Andrew Dice Clay) is the corpse in question. As each man spills his guts — Dehling to his priest, Randy to an aging hit man (Douglas), and Carl to his therapist (Reba McEntire) — it becomes clear that the femme fatale Jewel has been manipulating the smitten men for her own purposes, namely a house full of cutting-edge electronic gadgets.
